Everton must avoid another Neal Maupay disasterclass as Beto transfer news emerges

Everton could revive their January interest in Udinese striker Beto if they remain in the Premier League this season but it could well prove another Toffees disasterclass.

The 25-year-old Portuguese forward was one of numerous targets that the Toffees missed out on in the winter transfer window, despite doing “everything they could” to sign him.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported live on Sky Sports News on deadline day (31 January, 5:15pm) that the club had made a bid of €35million [£31million] but it was unsuccessful.

And according to Tutto Udinese [18 April], Beto is prepared to leave Udinese this summer and Everton could “return to the office” if they maintain their top-flight status this campaign.

Udinese Blog reported on 22 February that the Toffees could go again in the summer with a £26million offer.

Tutto Udinese reveal if the Toffees don’t continue their pursuit of Beto, several other Premier League teams are expected to enter the race to sign the 25-year-old and considering the torrid record Everton have in recruiting strikers in the recent past and the potential price of this transfer, it is a move Dyche and his recruitment staff should avoid.

The Blues already have a perfect example right under their noses with summer signing Neal Maupay failing to set Goodison Park alight since his move from Brighton.

The Frenchman has struggled to hit the ground running at Goodison Park since his summer transfer from Brighton, scoring just one goal from 22 Premier League outings and his agent Federico Pastorello admitted that Salernitana previously wanted to sign the Toffees striker, and he was expecting further offers from Italy in the summer.

Everton

According to Italian outlet TV Oggi Salerno [24 March], the Serie A side will make a new attempt to sign Maupay this summer which should come as a huge kick up the backside to the Goodison Park recruitment staff and warn them that they can’t just go for any striker who comes available in the market.

Beto falls under that category and is an unproven quality, not just potentially in the Premier League but at the top European level which makes any kind of move for him a huge risk if the Toffees revisit it this summer and at £26m, it represents an unnecessary and expensive transfer, especially given the Blues’ sorry financial mess.

They can ill-afford to get drawn into a needless transfer auction which could potentially waste the club’s time as they look to acquire quality attackers this summer.

For a striker who struggles to score goals at a regular rate, that is now what the club will need in the future. There are certainly better options out there, even options closer to home that can provide the attacking spark Goodison Park desperately desires.
