Matt Jones wowed by Goodison Park footage of Everton clash v Newcastle United amid off-field controversy

Liverpool ECHO journalist Matt Jones lavished praise on the “incredible” Everton support ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against Newcastle United despite the “saddening” off-field controversies.

Ahead of the match, exciting new footage dropped on social media [27 April] showing Everton fans in their numbers ramping up the game with flares outside the ground to welcome the players.

Jones believes it shows just how sad the state of the Goodison Park boardroom is though, with the lack of leadership and competence holding the club back.

And Jones took to his personal Twitter account [27 April] to praise the Toffees faithful and imagined what could have been if Everton weren’t embroiled in torrid off-field controversies.

He tweeted: “Fair play to anyone down at the ground tonight. It looks absolutely incredible – again.

“Just imagine if Everton had the off-field leadership and competence required to get this club moving in the right direction.

“It’s emboldening and saddening all at the same time.”

Saddening indeed

The atmosphere outside Goodison Park as seen on social media is absolutely jaw-dropping and a wonderful sight with Everton fans all coming together in their numbers to show their support for Sean Dyche and his players.

Despite all that’s going on behind the scenes at such a prestigious and historic football club, the Everton fans certainly deserve credit for not losing faith and Dyche will be hoping his team can feed off the electric atmosphere against Newcastle and in their remaining crucial Premier League games.

Everton

Jones is absolutely right to imagine what could have been had the club avoided such off-field controversies all stemming from the likes of majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright.

They certainly don’t deserve such rousing support given their continued and worrying incompetence and inept leadership of arguably one of the biggest clubs in the English top flight.

It’s certainly time for change at Goodison Park and much of that certainly involves the much-anticipated departure of Moshiri and the Toffees board.

First though, Everton have the small matter of securing their Premier League status and a win against Newcastle could go a long way in achieving those ambitions. Huge contest.
