Everton set for huge financial shock with struggle to survive without Premier League – Robbie Savage

Everton could be set for a “huge financial shock” if they are relegated from the Premier League this season, according to Robbie Savage.

The Toffees haven’t been relegated from the Premier League since the 1950-51 season but are currently 19th in the table, with just five matches of their campaign remaining.

Writing for The Mirror (Saturday 29 April, page 61), Savage admitted that Everton – who are one of only six clubs who have been ever-present in the Premier League since its foundation in 1992 – could struggle to survive without Premier League football.

“In the last 20 seasons, Everton have been in the top half for 14 campaigns, so this is a real giant on the wobble,” he wrote.

“Sean Dyche’s (top) side are not that bad, but are facing relegation, a huge financial shock and potentially a struggle to survive. There’s still time to mount a great escape.

“But they need a win at Leicester on Monday.”

Relegation six-pointer

The clash at the King Power Stadium could well define Everton’s season, with three points desperately needed to raise morale once again.

The 4-1 drubbing to Newcastle on Thursday (27 April) looked like a side who were sleepwalking their way towards relegation, and Sean Dyche has a job on his hands to get his players fully firing for the last five games of the season and the fight to beat the drop.

The club’s finances are already in a sticky situation, with owner Farhad Moshiri struggling for funding for the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium and looking for investors to help his cause.

Relegation from the Premier League would only add to these worries, with the financial ramifications of dropping out of the top-flight getting worse and worse every season.

It has been 72 years since the Merseyside club were relegated from the top flight, and this record is coming under increasing pressure as the weeks pass.
