Jamie Carragher delivers new relegation prediction after ‘outstanding’ Everton draw v Leicester City

Jamie Carragher believes Everton will get out of trouble if they replicate their “outstanding” performance against Leicester City over the last four games of the season.

The Toffees had to eventually settle for a 2-2 draw on Monday night (1 May) in the chaotic relegation tussle at the King Power Stadium, which left them in 19th position in the Premier League.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored just his second goal of the season from the penalty spot, while Alex Iwobi dragged Everton back into the encounter with a second-half strike which came after Caglar Soyuncu and Jamie Vardy’s goals.

Everton

“It’s a big point for Everton, but also the performance,” Carragher told Monday Night Football after the thrilling draw.

“I think they were outstanding in the game. Yes, Leicester had the chance to make it 3-1, but that performance from Everton, we saw the reaction of the fans.

“It was much improved and, as the game went on, you felt like if one team was going to get a winner, it would be Everton. They were by far the better team and I actually think Everton’s performance will worry Leeds and Nottingham Forest.

“If Everton can continue performing like that, they will get out of trouble.”

Everton

Still in trouble

Yes, Everton managed to pick up a point from the crunch clash against Leicester City, but was it really enough in the grand scheme of things?

After their drubbing to Newcastle last week, fans would have feared for the worst going into the relegation six-pointer, but the Toffees were largely the better side and had the chances to put the game to bed in the latter stages.

Despite this though, a point doesn’t really do too much good to their Premier League survival hopes.

Everton remain beached in 19th position on 29 points, with Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Leicester City all ahead of them on 30 points.

The main issue for Dyche is that he faces a tough trip to a Brighton side that tore Wolves to shreds last time out, followed by an even harder game against Manchester City.

Although the Toffees have two favourable final fixtures – against Wolves and Bournemouth – it could well be too late by this point if they aren’t careful.

The relegation battle hangs in the balance right now, but Everton aren’t out of the woods as Carragher implied.
