Chris Sutton reacts to Everton win v Brighton live on BT Sport after Jason Steele own goal

Chris Sutton reacted with disbelief as Everton struck a third goal against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Monday evening in their 5-1 win.

The former Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers striker gave a bonkers verdict, whilst slating the attempt of Seagulls goalkeeper Jason Steele who diverted a cross from Dwight McNeil into the net for an own goal.

A double from Abdoulaye Doucoure gave the Toffees a dream start before another counter-attack brought the third goal to send the visitors into the half-time break with a great chance to secure an important victory.

Sutton was right to criticise the attempt of the Brighton keeper, whilst acknowledging the crazy scoreline, given the contrasting fortunes of both sides, this season.

“This is a bonkers league,” he said on BT Sport 1 [18:09].

“McNeil, good feet, gets to the by-line but that is an absolute stinker from Steele.”

Something to hold on to

The third goal was a game-changer in more than one way. It gave Dyche’s side something to hold on to in terms of this fixture and overall, the 1-5 victory will do that for their ongoing fight to stay in the Premier League.

It will breathe new life and confidence into their campaign, as well as reflecting very well on the manager.

It was a typical Dyche performance in terms of the organisation, discipline, fitness, and resilience displayed by his side when it really mattered.

They achieved their first win in almost two months against Roberto De Zerbi’s team who will be shell-shocked after this encounter. They did not see it coming and no wonder.

Until Monday, Brighton had been flying but this thumping defeat will bring them and their European hopes back down to earth with a bump.

Next up for the Toffees is Manchester City on Saturday and Goodison Park will be full of belief after the Brighton bounce.
