Everton sent ‘tragic’ Premier League relegation warning despite 5-1 win v Brighton

Everton have to “finish the job” in the coming weeks in order to ensure the win against Brighton was not a “hollow victory,” according to journalist Chris Beesley.

The Toffees thumped high-flying Brighton 5-1 at the Amex in their Premier League clash on Monday (8 May).

It was a stunning performance from the away side, who are now two points clear of the relegation zone with three matches remaining.

“The visitors’ lightning transitions were executed in devastating fashion in what was a master class in counter-attacking play and having built up their lead, they were then equal to the task of the hosts throwing the kitchen sink at them in a desperate attempt to get back into the game after the break,” Beesley wrote for the Liverpool Echo.

“It felt like a turning point but now Everton must ensure it is and finish the job over the next three weekends because it would be tragic if this proved a hollow victory.”

Huge clash up next

Everton produced an unstoppable display to humiliate the Seagulls on the south coast, with every Toffees player doing their part to clinch the impressive victory.

It was a much-needed three points for Sean Dyche’s men, who now sit 17th in the table thanks to the win and indeed the losses for relegation rivals Leeds United and Leicester City.

Dyche will have congratulated his players for the fantastic win, but he will also be quick to remind them of the task at hand, which is, of course, staying in the Premier League.

They may just be brought crashing back down to earth in their next encounter, which is a home test against league leaders Manchester City on Sunday (14 May).

The Merseyside outfit will need to bring all the momentum from the win against Brighton into the clash at Goodison Park, with the home crowd set to play a huge role in getting behind their team for the hugely important encounter.
