Everton: Jamie Carragher posts joke reaction live as Manchester City prediction comes back to bite him at Goodison Park

Jamie Carragher reacted as his Everton tip against Manchester City crashed down in flames by posting a joke reference online.

The Sky Sports pundit had written in his column for the Telegraph on Friday (12 May) about how the Toffees could prove to be the title-chasers’ “toughest” challenge in their chase for the treble.

But despite a wonderful 5-1 win at Brighton last Monday (8 May) Sean Dyche’s side were unable to recreate that sort of performance and were swept aside by Pep Guardiola’s men.

Referencing his previous column during the second half on Sunday, with the score at 3-0, he posted on Twitter a gif of David Brent in The Office with the caption: “They won’t remember”.

Flop

Everton were understandably riding high after the performance at the Amex last week, and with the home fans behind them there was a lot of hope they could provide an encore against the reigning champions.

For most of the first half they held their own, but after the quick-fire double from Ilkay Gundogan and Erling Haaland just before the half the game was pretty much up.

When Dominic Calvert-Lewin was withdrawn at the break for Neal Maupay the writing was on the wall, with the hope from a Toffees perspective that it was Dyche acknowledging as much rather than it being a sign of another injury set back.

The game isn’t up for the relegation battle thanks to results elsewhere, and nobody would have put Everton down to get anything from this game on paper over a week ago.

But the Brighton win had increased expectations so the ease with which City ultimately pulled away was undoubtedly a let down for the Toffees supporters.

All eyes will now turn to the trip to Wolves next week (20 May) as this embattled side look to drag themselves over the line to safety.
