Doomsday plans in place at Everton as Finance Expert praises latest news

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...

Dan Plumley has insisted that new relegation clauses in contracts could be a “saving grace” for Everton as the Premier League nears its conclusion.

The finance expert reacted after reports suggested that a “doomsday” plan was in action, finally introducing the clause after many of the current squad had no such thing.

Everton are currently one point and place ahead of the relegation zone in the Premier League, with only two games left to play against Wolves and Bournemouth.

“That’s a bit of a saving grace that those contracts have them in,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“Any club at the minute, and I know that people speak about clubs who they don’t expect to be relegation, but you are only a couple of bad seasons away from that potentially happening.

I just think as standard practise now that clubs should have relegation clauses in contracts and likewise promotion bonuses going the other way, absolutely.

“If you’re going to have that revenue difference between leagues, you’ve got to look to structure your costs accordingly, so it’s a positive that it is in some of the new contracts, if it is, that’s great.

It doesn’t solve the overall issue with the ones that aren’t, but you will have to adjust to that and the wage bill has been a problem for Everton in the last three-to-four years for sure, you can see that in the numbers, so it doesn’t solve the whole problem but it’s good they’re in there.

The club can now look to move forward in the future dependent on what happens with an overall look at the squad.”

Everton Farhad Moshiri

Whether it was Farhad Moshiri or those advising him who made this decision, finally, a positive move has been made in the boardroom at Goodison Park.

Protecting against relegation is vital with no one club too big to go down, with West Ham showing that this season with their skating on-thin-ice act.

Everton need to concentrate on themselves, survival is still in their own hands.
