Everton may hand new contract to goalkeeper Asmir Begovic

Everton could reportedly look to retain the services of exit-bound goalkeeper Asmir Begovic whose deal runs out in June 2023.

According to the Liverpool Echo [3 June], he could stay put at Goodison Park to be Jordan Pickford’s backup for the 2023/24 season.

This would mean that the club may hand him a new contract in order to ensure that he can play for them in the upcoming campaign.

Short term makes sense

Begovic has not had much to do at Everton and that’s a good thing as it means Pickford has been fit and performing well.

There’s also no reason to mess with the goalkeeper dynamics if both of them are happy with their position in the team.

An argument could be made that Everton may need a number-one candidate to put the pressure on the Englishman in order to make it a heated battle and purely based on merit.

However, that option is not going to be cheap and it’s not like the Toffees have an abundance of funds to attack this window with.

They’ve got to be clever with their deals and ensure that clubs aren’t taking them for a ride in negotiations so deals may take longer to finish.

There’s already plenty of pressure on Farhad Moshiri, now from the UK government as well, so it’s not the best of times for the club.
