Everton transfer update as goalkeeper Asmir Begovic ‘will leave’ Goodison Park – BBC Sport

Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic “will leave” Goodison Park this summer, according to BBC Sport.

The 35-year-old joined the Toffees from Bournemouth in July 2021, and his contract is expiring later this month.

He made just 10 appearances for the club, having served as back-up to number one Jordan Pickford.

BBC Sport reported that 35-year-old Begovic “will leave having featured in four league games across two seasons”.

Everton exit likely

Begovic wasn’t a regular figure on the pitch at Goodison Park, with the goalkeeper just about reaching double figures for appearances across his two-year spell at the Merseyside outfit.

But his Premier League experience at the likes of Bournemouth, Stoke City and Chelsea will have been invaluable behind the scenes at the Toffees, with his efforts on the training ground and presence in the dressing room definitely helping raise standards on the pitch.

Most impacted will have been Everton star Pickford, who was always going to be the club’s number one, but will have certainly benefitted from training alongside such an experienced goalkeeper every day.

Begovic’s future is now up in the air, but he looks certain to be playing away from Goodison Park next season.

Whether the Bosnian stays in the Premier League remains to be seen, with another back-up role likely in store if he does choose to stay in England’s top flight.

There are plenty of top flight clubs that could do a lot worse than having someone like Begovic at their club, even if it is to serve as a training companion and cup goalkeeper.

But having previously played for the likes of AC Milan, the shot-stopper may fancy one more trip abroad before hanging up his boots.

For Everton, his likely exit means the Toffees will be forced into finding a new partner for Pickford for the upcoming season, with the future of 39-year-old Andy Lonergan also uncertain.
