Everton transfer news: Sky Sports pundit reacts amid Tammy Abraham to Goodison Park updates as striker put up for sale

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Everton are unlikely to be able to afford any move for Tammy Abraham this summer so the deal probably doesn’t have legs, says Kevin Campbell.

According to i News (29 May) an approach was made to Roma for the former Chelsea man in the January window, and Gazzetta dello Sport reported on 9 March that the Toffees were in the “front row” with Aston Villa for the striker.

The Italian side put him up for sale ahead of the transfer window due to FFP concerns [Telegraph, 1 June], but ex-Goodison striker Campbell feels that, investment in the club pending, the size of any transfer would make it prohibitive for Everton this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News the Sky Sports pundit said: “No, I don’t think it has [a chance].

“I think the money that Roma’s going to want will be a bit too heavy, at this point in time.

“I’m only talking pre-sale or pre-investment, so I can only speak right now.

“Whatever he’ll cost for Everton I think will be a rich at this present moment in time. Sean Dyche needs to be able to move and shake and recruit wisely.

“Just throwing money at stuff I don’t think is going to work.”

Abraham would fit the profile of a Dominic Calvert-Lewin stand-in or replacement, even if his control is perhaps weaker than the injury-prone Toffees star, and somebody needs to arrive this summer because the often-absent number nine and Neal Maupay, who might leave anyway, aren’t going to cut it.

But after the latest development saw the 25-year-old suffer a serious knee injury in Roma’s final game of the season against Spezia [BBC Sport, 5 June] there have to now be major doubts whether he will be moving anywhere during this window, with months of rehab ahead.

That is undoubtedly a hugely unfortunate blow to the England forward, but based on Campbell’s assessment it won’t change the transfer activity at Goodison Park over the coming months.
