Finance Expert reacts to legal news on Everton and Premier League

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...

Dan Plumley has insisted that any legal action against Everton or the Premier League would be hard to get over the line for any club.

It comes after the Daily Mail reported that the Toffees face being sued for £300million by the likes of Leicester, Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Burnley.

The finance expert admitted that with so many complexities, it would take a collective effort to get something over the line in terms of punishment.

“This is always the kind of way with this type of stuff,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“We saw it last season, it’s how much those clubs that are now safe really want to push the envelope, and you’re never sure if they actually will as their problems have now gone away for another season.

You are then looking at the relegated clubs and they’ve got to work together in a way to do anything there, it needs collective bargaining power as much as anything and the minute clubs start to drop away from that, I would imagine something similar to last season will play out.

There is no benchmark and no precedent, so we’re all clutching at straws so it’s not an easy one to get over the line with lots of legal complexities within that.”

With the Premier League investigation still ongoing into potential profit and sustainability regulations at Everton, there is still no clarity on what may happen.

Given that this hasn’t happened before, there has been the possibility of points deductions as well as fines, something that could have resulted in relegation if it happened before the end of the season.

This will likely go away as time goes on, as has happened before with other potential legal battles.
