Everton transfer news: Dominic Calvert-Lewin faces cut-price exit amid ‘problem’ at Goodison – Sky Sports pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

The same reason that means Dominic Calvert-Lewin might need to leave Everton in the transfer window will probably mean the money he is worth won’t be on offer fears Kevin Campbell.

The former Toffees striker believes his current successor is “awesome” and “outstanding” when fit but the club has a big problem in that he rarely is, meaning it might be time for a change with Sean Dyche needing to sign attackers anyway.

Everton priced Newcastle out of the market a year ago with a £60million price tag [Telegraph] but Campbell feels there could be interest again this summer, although with nowhere near that sort of offer on the cards it is a tricky decision.

“Here’s one thing I will tell you. Sean Dyche needs to get a striker in who he can rely on,” the Sky Sports pundit said, speaking exclusively to Goodison News.

“Calvert-Lewin when he’s fit is an awesome player, you saw it in those few games that he played that culminated in that 5-1 win away at Brighton. You know how hard it is to go there and win.

“He was outstanding. He’s an outstanding footballer when he’s fit. The problem is he’s not fit enough.

“And you can see when he’s not fit enough Everton do not have the resources, the players, to be a team who don’t struggle.

“So I think that’s going to be one of the most important things that Sean Dyche does, he’s got to go and get some firepower.

“We discussed it earlier on in the season, coming into January, they needed firepower. And all the way through January, they needed firepower.

“Sean Dyche comes in, couldn’t sign anybody, just about keeps their noses in the Premier League on the last day of the season.

“Why? Because they lacked firepower. If they had it Everton wouldn’t be in that problem.

“When you look at the Richarlison situation. I think he scored a dozen goals. You take a dozen goals out of this Everton side, that’s why they’re the lowest scorers to stay up.

“If you add another dozen goals they’re more than comfortable, that’s how fine the margins are.

“Calvert-Lewin, would he be sought after if he came on the market? I still think he will.

“But the type of money Everton might want for him, I can’t see other teams paying it, solely because in the last two or three seasons I don’t think he’s played 30 or 40 games.

“So it’s a tough one.”

Everton, Calvert-Lewin and Dyche have all put so much work into getting the 26-year-old past his injury issues without success so far that there will come a point where they exhaust their options.

If they can’t be confident in having him available for any length of time then even moderate money might become preferable to put towards a replacement.

In an ideal world Calvert-Lewin would be the main man at Goodison as he has been in the past, but after two straight seasons of struggle it might now be a change of scenery that is the only way for things to improve for him.
