Everton want to sign Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton to replace exit-bound Amadou Onana

Everton want to sign Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton to replace Amadou Onana if the Belgian leaves, according to Alan Nixon.

The Toffees are in major financial trouble and are expected to be forced to sell a major asset during the summer transfer window to fund their business ahead of the new season.

With Onana targeted by several Premier League clubs, journalist Nixon wrote on his Patreon account (25 June) that Everton are already looking at replacements with Wharton top of their list.

“Everton are already looking at signing a new midfielder to replace Onana and have Blackburn’s outstanding Adam Wharton in their sights,” he wrote.

“Newcastle have already made a move for Wharton but Everton may match the valuation and give him a better and quicker chance of playing in the Premier League.

“Wharton is also happy to sign a new deal at Blackburn and then look to move in a year. So Everton would also have to sell the transfer to him.”

Talent

Wharton may be just 19 but he has shown that he clearly has the ability to play at the highest level after shining in the Championship for a team that was pushing for promotion.

But replacing Onana would be an absolutely monstrous task because the Belgian was one of the best performers over the course of the season for Everton.

Onana lost his place in the team during the run-in as Sean Dyche preferred to go with James Garner, which clearly opens up the possibility of the Belgium international being the big money sale that happens this summer.

There was a big outlay to bring him to the club initially, and they still owe money on the deal, but if we can generate a big profit on the transfer for him to go and then we can replace him adequately then it would be smart business.

You can expect plenty of interest in Wharton this summer, so it’s good for Everton to be in the race early and ready to splash the cash if necessary.

In other Everton news, Sean Dyche has held talks with one first-team player about his future at the club.
