Everton transfer news as Amadou Onana backed to stay amid key ‘message’ at Goodison Park

Amadou Onana is likely to remain at Everton ahead of the new campaign unless an unbelievable bid is received or the midfielder throws his “toys out of the pram” for a move away, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Belgian international joined Goodison Park in a big-money £33m move last summer and has swiftly become a star player and an instant hit amongst the Everton support despite the Toffees narrowly escaping relegation on the Premier League final day.

As a result of his swift emergence on the scene in the English top-flight and his showstopping performances in a rather disastrous Everton team, Onana has been attracting plenty of interest from the Premier League’s elite with the Daily Mail reporting on 11 July that the Toffees are under pressure to sell the 21-year-old midfielder despite the club’s financial constraints.

And according to former Eurosport journalist Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport [2 July] the key message at Goodison Park has always been that Onana is “very happy” at Everton and unless the Blues receive an “unbelievable” bid he won’t be departing.

He said: “There are so many rumours around Onana at the moment and the message always comes back that he’s very happy at Everton. And unless it’s an unbelievable bid or he throws his toys out the pram, he’s probably not going to be leaving.”

Funds for signings?

Everton are desperate to sell one of their key stars this summer, in order to loosen the purse belt at Goodison Park and according to one new transfer development, the Toffees may be moving closer to their wish being granted.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, taking to his personal Twitter account [14 June] revealed that Billionaire-owned club Chelsea have opened discussions for Onana’s services, with Everton wanting a fee of around £55m because of their financial issues. The 21-year-old is said to be open to a Goodison Park exit this summer.

It was only going to be a matter of time before Onana’s performances attracted the attention of Europe’s elite, and it looked as if Everton were going to face a tough and frustrating fight to keep their star midfielder on their books at Goodison Park.

However, Jones’ update on Onana’s future provides a real source of encouragement but it also means that Everton may struggle to attract the funds they need to secure some much-needed signings this summer.

With £55m wanted by the Toffees in order to sell their star man, it’s now up to those interested parties to cough up the cash for Onana’s services, but more crucially, Everton must choose which they want more; Onana to remain at the club or a hugely significant cash injection to fund new signings? The Goodison faithful will be dreaming of both.

In other Everton news, an update on potential “bad blood” has emerged as the Toffees push for a surprise signing this summer.
