Manchester City scouted Ishe Samuels-Smith but the Everton defender now appears set to join Chelsea for a multi-million fee.
According to the Daily Mail [6 July], despite the Citizens scouting him last season, he will be joining the London club for a £4million fee.
The same report labels him the “Next Leighton Baines” and that could be something that the Toffees fans might not like.
Baines is a modern-day club legend and the supporters are aware at how badly the club is run financially from top to bottom.
They know that until Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright are there, nothing is going to change at the club and the signings made are going to be underwhelming.
Rather than cashing in on Samuels-Smith, had the club promised him first-team minutes for the upcoming season, they stood a chance of retaining his services.
The 17-year-old, who’s agreed a three-year deal to join Chelsea will just be one among many at Stamford Bridge and could become part of their loan army.
At Everton, he’s already been on the matchday squad and appears to be a lot closer to his senior debut than he will be in West London.
With Ruben Vinagre also not returning for next season, he would have had a chance of competing with Vitalii Myolenko for a first-team berth.
While the lure to get that kind of money for a 17-year-old may be irresistible, he could’ve been an option worth keeping and his value could’ve skyrocketed in the coming years.
