Everton fans must forgive and forget amid Arnaut Danjuma transfer update

It is not always easy in football to forgive and forget but it is something Everton fans must do with Arnaut Danjuma.

Back in January, the Toffees failed to add any bodies to their squad to help in the fight against relegation from the Premier League but it was not always for the want of trying.

Indeed, Sean Dyche and the Toffees’ hierarchy thought one deal was done and that was the loan signing of Danjuma from Villarreal.

However, at the 24th hour, the former Bournemouth winger opted to head instead to Tottenham, where by and large he did an excellent job at warming the substitutes’ bench.

Everton fans, as you can understand, were seething at the snub and Danjuma came in for a lot of backlash on social media.

The thought that he could ever pull on an Everton jersey was pretty fanciful but an unexpected twist in this transfer tale means perhaps it is not as unlikely as it once was.

The Liverpool Echo reported (12 July) that Danjuma is once again on Everton’s radar this window and that there is “no bad blood” between the two sides over how things transpired in the winter.

Looking at things through a neutral lens, you can understand why Danjuma opted for Spurs over Everton, who after all were absolutely mired in a relegation dogfight.

But you also have to empathise with the fans’ mixed reaction to the news that Everton are in the hunt to sign him once again.

And yet, there is a feeling that perhaps now is the time to forgive any past transgressions, as hard as that may be.

The Toffees are in desperate need of players and are still walking a Financial Fair Play tightrope. Danjuma represents an option that will probably meet their constraints and moreover is a game-changer and a player who will add a bit of spark to an attack that never ignited last season.

It won’t be easy for supporters just to put any lingering ill-feeling to one side, but if they do they might just end up with a gem.
