Jason Cundy praises ‘brilliant’ Ashley Young live on talkSPORT after Everton transfer

Jason Cundy piled the praise on Everton’s latest recruit Ashley Young live on talkSPORT.

The Toffees announced the signing of Young on a one-year deal (13 July) as the 38-year-old became Sean Dyche’s first signing since he took over at the club.

Young has since joined up with Everton at their pre-season training camp in Evian and while discussing the signing live on talkSPORT (16:00pm, 14 July) host Cundy was full of praise for the veteran full-back.

“Can we just have a little round of applause for Ashley Young on what has been an unbelievable career at the highest level,” Cundy said.

“Let’s give him a little bit of credit. What a career, the fact that we have got a club the size of Everton looking to sign him on a free transfer, it just pays testament to what he has done.”

Experience

Cundy is spot on that Young has had a fantastic career and to still be playing in the Premier League for a top club at the age of 38 is something very few players can say they’ve been able to do.

His experience at the highest level could help to steer the Toffees away from any potential danger next season. However, while his age brings its advantage, some fans might be equally concerned about the drawbacks.

The Premier League isn’t getting any slower and wingers are becoming quicker and more tricky to play against, which could work against Young due to his advancing age.

With 34-year-old Seamus Coleman defending the other flank and 30-year-old Michael Keane at centre-back, the average age of Dyche’s defence could cause some issues.

But with age comes know-how and fans will hope that their veteran stars can use that know-how to their advantage to make up for their other weaknesses.

In other Everton news, the club want to make four new transfers before the season begins.
