Jamie Hoyland exits senior transfer role at Everton

Everton’s senior European scout Jamie Hoyland has announced his departure from the club after seven years.

Posting to his personal LinkedIn profile, Hoyland bid farewell after being the lead scout responsible for finding and signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jarred Braithwaite.

The former Manchester City midfielder turned scout left the club at a time of significant change in the Everton backroom, with the club’s director of football Kevin Thelwell in the process of revamping the structure of the club while Lee Sargeson was appointed from Brighton at the head of scouting [Liverpool Echo].

Victim of restructuring?

The club seem to be in a phase of change. With changes being made to the club’s scouting process including Sargeson’s appointment from Brighton, perhaps it was Hoyland’s time to move on.

Thelwell too has big plans for Everton, setting out a 120-point plan on building a sustainable and successful model which seeks to progress the club on and off the pitch, from the first team to the academy [Liverpool Echo].

With Sean Dyche remaining in the Everton dugout after a close call with relegation last season, Everton will be shifting their transfer policies compared to recent windows, perhaps targeting more cost-effective signings than the likes of Yerry Mina and Davy Klaassen who cost a combined £57.25million [Transfermarkt].

However, the Dutchman’s achievements should not be understated. His scouting of Calvert-Lewin proved a huge success, with the Englishman coming into the club for a reported £1.5million [Transfermarkt] from Sheffield United in 2016.

Since then the 26-year-old has earned his way into the England national side and scored 60 goals for the Toffees.

Braithwaite too looks to be a top centre-back prospect after good loan spells with PSV and Championship side Blackburn Rovers. His £1million fee from Carlisle United [Daily Mail] has more than paid for itself since, with both players showing Hoyland’s skill at scouting and recruitment.

He may be missed in Merseyside, but bigger things are underway at Goodison Park that could spell wonders for the club’s future.

In other Everton news, the Toffees and Almeria had reportedly reached an agreement for a seven-goal 21-year-old Mali international, but a recent update puts the deal in jeopardy.
