Salernitana have ‘Top secret’ transfer targets as Neal Maupay could leave Everton

Neal Maupay could be set to leave Everton after only a year at Goodison Park with Serie A side Salernitana considering the French forward among their “top secret” targets, according to Corriere Dello Sport (pg 24).

The striker joined Everton from Brighton and Hove Albion last summer but has struggled to make an impact, scoring only once in 27 Premier League appearances and is one of many forwards on the radar of Salernitana, who have a long-standing interest.

There is plenty of speculation that Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia could be the subject of interest from the likes of AC Milan and Fiorentina, having impressed for the Granata on loan last season.

If he is to depart the Stadio Arechi, they will quickly look for other striker options, with Maupay one of the potential targets among some “top secret” names who are committed to clubs abroad.

Maupay has seen his involvement at Goodison dwindle under Sean Dyche, only starting once in the final 12 games of Everton’s Premier League season and would likely be available for the right price.

Not the right fit

The signing of Maupay last season raised a few eyebrows initially, with his less-than-modest goal return during his spell on the south coast not indicating he would provide the goals to ensure Everton’s safety.

It didn’t quite work for the Frenchman under Frank Lampard and he certainly doesn’t fit the bill of what you would expect from a striker in a Dyche team, normally required to hold the ball up and be a physical presence.

While Dominic Calvert-Lewin seems to be the ideal fit for Everton’s striker problems, he hasn’t been able to stay fit under Dyche so far and if Maupay does leave, the options are quickly very limited on Merseyside.

With Ellis Simms’ departure to Coventry City confirmed and Moise Keane’s move to Juventus now permanent, any money earned through the sale of Maupay would have to be reinvested into the frontline before the Premier League season gets underway.

This is one to watch.
