Sky Sports pundit: Everton told to sign Moussa Dembele in no-excuse transfer

Former Everton star Kevin Campbell has called on the club to sign forward Moussa Dembele on a free transfer this summer.

The Frenchman, who Brendan Rodgers once referred to as a “quality” player, left Lyon after a five-year spell at the end of last season, with the Toffees being long-term admirers of the striker.

Following the 27-year-old’s departure from Parc Olympique Lyonnais, where he scored 21 goals in Ligue 1 for the club in the 2021/22 season, Campbell told Falcon Blues TV that his former side have “no excuses” not to sign up the forward.

“I quite like the link with Dembele,” he said. “I like Dembele, he’s a free so are there excuses? There’s no excuses. That’s somebody you can make it work with.

“He’s played for a lot of top clubs around Europe. He’s not even hit his peak yet, so I think he would be somebody that could do a job at Everton.”

Unique opportunity

A player of Dembele’s quality still being available on a free transfer presents a unique opportunity to Everton, given that Sean Dyche is desperate to get a new forward through the door while operating within a tight budget.

The fact he’s also available on a free means there is very little risk in the move for the Toffees, even if his wage demands would probably still be quite high.

Although he struggled in front of goal for Lyon last season – registering just three strikes in his 21 league appearances – he showed the previous campaign that he is a quality operator with his 21 goals in 30 Ligue 1 matches.

There is, however, a potentially major hurdle in the clubs way of bringing him in, with Steven Gerrard reportedly interested in signing him for Al-Ettifaq, as the Saudi outfit are likely able to offer him higher wages than the Toffees.

But if he does still have the desire to play in a top European league, then it’s time for Everton to make a move for the forward.
