Hope for Everton Premier League future despite damaging £381m news

Everton have struggled on the pitch in recent times, with the Toffees involved in a Premier League relegation fight in the last couple of seasons.

And a lot of those struggles can be pinned to the constant financial issues at the Merseyside outfit, with Everton forced to sell the likes of star players Richarlison and Anthony Gordon in recent windows just to keep their head above water.

There hasn’t been such a high-profile sale this summer, at least not yet anyway, but the club have saved significant sums in terms of wages after letting go of the likes of Yerry Mina, Tom Davies and Andros Townsend.

The latest Premier League Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) positions from football finance expert Swiss Ramble do, however, read badly for the Toffees.

Assessing which clubs may have the flexibility to spend in the transfer window and who would be significantly impacted, Swiss Ramble revealed that over a three-year monitoring period to 2021/22, Everton made an operating loss of £381million.

Only big-spending Chelsea sit above the Goodison Park club in the list, with the West London outfit having an operating loss of £552million for the period.

There is, however, hope for the Toffees, with the Liverpool Echo noting: “Everton’s financial picture is undoubtedly improving from the bleakness it suffered, but there is still a lot of road to travel and the likely need for consolidation this season on a tight budget to hopefully start to move the needle in the right direction once more with regards to competitive transfer spend over the next 18 months or so, with the move into the new stadium key to unlocking greater revenue generating potential.”

The sooner the Bramley-Moore Dock facility is ready the better, but for now Sean Dyche must work within the current constraints to secure the club’s Premier League safety for another season, which will of course be a very difficult task.
