Everton want £1m loan fee for in-demand striker Tom Cannon, six clubs interested

Everton want a £1million fee to allow in-demand striker Tom Cannon to leave the club on loan, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Writing on his patreon account, Nixon revealed there are as many as six Championship clubs in the hunt for 20-year-old.

Preston, Sunderland, Blackburn, Stoke, Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday are the teams said to be chasing Cannon, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the former – scoring eight goals in 20 Championship appearances.

Nixon reports that Preston would be open to getting near the figure should it be “based on achievements and final league position”.

Sunderland may also still be interested in a full deal, though Everton rate Cannon highly.

It makes financial sense

Another year of Championship football and a full campaign getting regular minutes is likely to be exactly what Cannon needs, especially given he is unlikely to get many starts at Goodison Park.

That is not to say Everton do not see a future for him, but more that it would stifle his progress if he were to be sat on the bench or consigned to U-23 football when he has already proven capable of performing in the second tier.

But that does not mean Everton should just let him out for free, and a seven-figure loan sum – while quite high for Championship clubs who have to live within their financial means – seems a pretty fair one.

Preston would feel like the most natural choice given Cannon spent time there last season and knows manager Ryan Lowe and the way he will utilise him.

Money, as we all know, talks in football, though, and it feels like Cannon may end up going to the highest bidder – at least temporarily anyway.

In other Everton news, the Toffees want to sign Kelechi Iheanacho from Leicester City after missing out on two strikers.
