Everton won’t sanction Tom Cannon loan exit until incoming signings sealed

Everton are unlikely to sanction a loan exit for Tom Cannon until they have bolstered their own options, according to the Liverpool ECHO.

Writing on their official website (27 July), the reliable news outlet report that the club have already held talks over a potential loan exit with all of Preston, Sunderland, Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday showing an interest in signing him.

But with Arnaut Danjuma currently the only addition to the forward line, Everton are reluctant to let him leave until more have been brought in for Sean Dyche.

“The ECHO has previously reported that Preston North End and Sunderland are interested in signing the forward this summer, but it has now emerged that Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday are also interested in adding the 20-year-old to their ranks,” they wrote.

“However, the ECHO also understands that Everton are unlikely to sanction any deal involving Cannon until the club has boosted its own attacking options.”

Smart

Cannon is at the stage of his career now where he needs to be playing regular football, whether that is at Goodison Park or elsewhere.

After letting Ellis Simms leave this summer, the club are short on natural striker options despite the arrival of Danjuma who is capable of playing there.

Cannon has plenty of interest and that leaves the door open for a transfer at a later stage of the window, meaning Everton are in no rush to sanction an exit until they have their own ducks in a row.

Sean Dyche has obviously prioritised the hunt for a new striker, but everyone is well aware of how good Cannon is and can be. His form at Preston in the second half of last season even led to Jeff Stelling labelling him as “absolutely fantastic“.

There’s no rush and this is a sensible and smart decision from the club to ensure we’re not worse off in this situation.
