Medical underway for Mason Holgate loan exit from Everton – Alan Myers

Everton defender Mason Holgate is currently having a medical at Southampton ahead of a season-long loan move, reports Alan Myers.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (25 August), the Sky Sports journalist reports the 26-year-old is set to leave Goodison Park on loan for the season with no option to buy.

Holgate hasn’t featured for Sean Dyche yet this season and has been told he is free to leave, and the Saints have made their move to bring him in now with a deal agreed between the two parties.

“Mason Holgate having medical at Southampton ahead of season long loan (no option to buy),” he wrote.

Excellent

The defensive area of the team has been very overstocked for a while now, and the club made an effort to clear the squad a bit this summer.

Yerry Mina was allowed to leave at the end of his contract, Conor Coady’s loan wasn’t made permanent and Ruben Vinagre might as well have never been here.

Everton

Dyche has brought back Jarrad Branthwaite from his loan at PSV and Ashley Young has come in on a free transfer to bolster the full-back positions, which leaves Holgate way down the pecking order.

James Tarkowski, Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey are all still unmentioned and it makes sense for everyone that Holgate move on and play elsewhere rather than get paid to barely even make our match-day squads.

Southampton will be paying a share of his wages which helps us too, and with the window closing in a week it was imperative that this type of exit took place. There’s space for another incoming now too if they can make it work.
