Everton receive multiple bids for Tom Cannon, latest in region of £7.5m – The Athletic

Everton have received bids in the region of £7.5million for striker Tom Cannon, according to Patrick Boyland.

Boyland reported via The Athletic’s transfer blog on Wednesday [30 August, 18:06] that Cannon is wanted by numerous Championship clubs.

Sunderland, Stoke City, Norwich City and Preston North End, where Cannon spent last season on loan, have each been credited with an interest.

Boyland posted: “The 20-year-old, who is a product of Everton’s academy, could leave on permanent deal and the club have received bids of around £7.5million for the striker.

“Cannon spent last season on loan at Preston North End and were expected to take him on loan earlier in the window. The move was delayed, however, while Everton sought attacking additions.”

Decision time

Sky Sports News reported on Wednesday [30 August] that Norwich had tabled a £7m bid for Cannon, so it appears the Canaries have already been trumped by a rival club.

It is understandable that Cannon is attracting interest from teams in the second tier, given he scored eight goals and assisted another in 20 appearances for Preston in the second half of last season.

That scoring rate of 0.43 goals per 90 minutes was similar to Joel Piroe (0.45) and Viktor Gyokeres (0.47) [FBref] – albeit over the course of a whole campaign – with the latter pair exchanging clubs for sizable fees this summer.

Many Everton fans will question why Cannon is not being given a chance in the first team this season, with the Toffees’ inability to score goals becoming more and more frustrating by the week.

Making a £7.5m profit on academy product Cannon would be good business on the face of it but, having also offloaded Ellis Sims to Coventry City, it begs the question of exactly where young talent stand when it comes to breaking into the first team.

Should the Merseyside outfit indeed cash in, they will just be praying that Beto and Youssef Chermiti can provide the goals that help to keep them up.
