BBC journalist slams ‘truly wretched’ Everton after ‘horror show’ v Doncaster Rovers

Everton were “truly wretched” in the first 45 minutes of their EFL Cup clash with Doncaster Rovers, according to BBC Sport journalist Phil McNulty.

The Toffees won the second round clash 2-1 on Wednesday (30 August), with summer signings Beto and Arnaut Danjuma on the scoresheet.

It was the club’s first goals of the new season, with Everton failing to find the back of the net in any of their first three league games.

“Dyche said he took the opportunity to remind his players that the media were waiting for Everton to lose – it is an old school tactic but it is to be hoped he also reminded them, far more pertinently, of what a truly wretched performance they had delivered in a 45-minute horror show,” McNulty wrote for BBC Sport.

Lucky escape

The Toffees have endured a truly shocking start to the new Premier League campaign, with Sean Dyche’s side the only club not to score so far this season.

They have now finally put the ball in the net, but the fact it came against lesser opposition will worry the man in the dugout.

Moreover, it took the Merseyside club a total of 73 minutes before they scored against Doncaster, having gone 1-0 down in the 44th minute.

They then left it until the 88th minute to find a winner, much to the delight and indeed relief of everyone associated with the Toffees.

In a major positive, new signing Beto is already off the mark, having only just joined the club from Udinese on Tuesday (29 August).

The early goal will do him the world of confidence, with the same to be said of fellow summer arrival Danjuma, who also scored his first Everton goal.

In other Everton news, summer signing Youssef Chermiti has sent a two-word message as the latest Toffees transfer news emerges.
