Phil McNulty shares why Everton are forced to sell Alex Iwobi as Fulham agree deal
Phil McNulty has revealed that Everton couldn’t afford to keep hold of Alex Iwobi after Fulham have agreed a deal for the midfielder.
The BBC Sport journalist said the Toffees’ hand has been forced because they are “strapped for cash” and the Nigerian international “won’t sign a new contract” as he is into the final year of his deal at Goodison Park.
He added that the 27-year-old wants to leave the club after the Cottagers have agreed a deal worth £22million for the midfielder as he looks set for a deadline-day exit from Merseyside.
Sad reality
This insight from McNulty shows the sad reality that Everton currently find themselves in following the financial issues that are surrounding the Merseysiders.
There is no way that a player should be looking to leave a club the size of the Blues for someone like Fulham, but that is how far they have fallen.
At the moment in time, it’s probably a decent upgrade for Iwobi because it already looks as though the Toffees could be in for another difficult season.

The fee on the table is a pretty decent chunk of change because they could’ve lost him for nothing next summer, but it’s yet to be seen whether that money will be reinvested in the squad or just go towards easing some of their financial worries.
Sean Dyche will be disappointed to lose the midfielder after he has been integral to his plans since he joined the club and the squad is already lacking in quality.
In other Everton news, Don Hutchison was impressed by a player’s “brilliant” performance against Doncaster.
