Darren Fletcher stunned by ‘Astonishing’ moment in Everton draw v Sheffield United
TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher was left stunned by Sheffield United’s second goal in their 2-2 draw with Everton on Saturday.
The Toffees took a 1-0 lead through Abdoulaye Doucoure before Cameron Archer netted on his debut to level things up. The young striker then found the net again to make it 2-1, but only thanks to a crazy deflection.
Archr cut inside onto his right foot and curled a fine effort off the post, but the ball bounced back off Jordan Pickford’s head and into the net, with Fletcher describing the incident as “astonishing” while live on TNT Sports.
“Astonishing,” he said (2 September, 13:18). “It’s an own goal from Jordan Pickford.
“The initial play from Sheffield United was outstanding again, Hamer from the outset. Excellent try from Archer, and the luck favours the Blades it goes in off the back of the England goalkeeper. The Blades lead 2-1.”
Ridiculous
If it wasn’t for bad luck, Everton would have no luck at all right now.
For the third time this season we were the better team on the day, and yet that lack of killer instinct in front of goal and bad decision-making from individuals means we’re without any wins after four games.

There’s absolutely nothing Jordan Pickford can do about the second goal going in, but some of the defending on the day was laughable from the Toffees and we were punished by a side that simply aren’t as good as us.
We need to be more ruthless in front of goal and also cut out these silly individual mistakes that continually cost us if we want to avoid a repeat of the last two seasons where we’re fighting for our lives in April and May.
It’s rotten luck that this goal went in, but we can’t keep having decent performances and not pick up all three points because that means they’re not good enough performances at the end of the day.
