Everton wanted to sign Arsenal defender Cedric Soares before transfer deadline

Everton showed interest in signing Arsenal defender Cedric Soares on transfer deadline day before the 11pm deadline, reports James Olley.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (2 September), the ESPN journalist reports that the Toffees and Greek side Olympiacos showed interest but nothing materialised before Friday’s deadline.

However the Portuguese international full-back could still be on the move with the Greek transfer window open until September 11th.

“Everton and Olympiacos showed some interest in Arsenal defender Cedric Soares this week,” he wrote.

“Didn’t materialise into anything yesterday but still time for Olympiacos if they choose to pursue him – Greek transfer deadline is September 11.”

Interesting

Had the club been looking to sign Cedric then it suggests that either Dyche isn’t happy with his full-back options or they were plotting for a replacement.

Alex Iwobi obviously ended up heading to Fulham in a £22m deal which is regarded as fantastic business considering he was in the final year of his contract and had no interest in renewing.

And with Ashley Young in the squad after his free transfer arrival earlier in the summer, Dyche may see the veteran as a direct replacement in the wide area that the Nigeria international used to take up for us.

That would then potentially leave us short at full-back with just Vitalii Mykolenko, Nathan Patterson and an injured Seamus Coleman, so Cedric’s arrival would have made sense.

But it didn’t happen and instead Dyche will have to go with Young in two different positions as cover until January at least.
