Everton help create unwanted top-flight history despite draw v Sheffield United
Everton finally got their first points of the new Premier League season with their 2-2 draw with Sheffield United, with the Toffees drawing 2-2 with the newly-promoted club at Bramall Lane on Saturday (2 September).
Not only did they pick up their first points, but they also scored their first league goals, with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Arnaut Danjuma finding the back of the net. However, despite the draw, the Merseyside club still managed to help create some unwanted top-flight history.
As per OptaJoe: “With Everton, Sheffield United, Luton Town and Burnley doing so this season, this is the first time in English top-flight history as many as four teams have lost their opening three games to a campaign. Hardship.”
Both the Toffees and Blades had already suffered three defeats before their recent clash, but Luton and Burnley had played a match fewer.
That was until Friday (1 September), when Luton lost 2-1 to West Ham, and Saturday, when Burnley lost 5-2 to Tottenham Hotspur.
The statistic is bad enough for Sean Dyche’s side, but it is made even worse given how the three clubs joining them – Sheffield United, Luton and Burnley – were the three clubs who were promoted from the Championship last season.
Everton have only just managed to stay in the top-flight in the past two seasons, and they could be in for real danger once again this time around if they do not get their act together quickly.
And things won’t get any easier for the Toffees anytime soon, with clashes against Arsenal and Brentford up next.
