Nothing has changed in Everton attack as bottom-of-the-table Premier League statistic emerges

Everton fans are once again fearing the worst, with their club having only just managed to stay in the Premier League last season.

Abdoulaye Doucoure’s strike in the 1-0 win against Bournemouth at Goodison Park saved the Toffees from the drop last time out, but the Merseyside outfit are already back in the bottom three in the new campaign.

Sean Dyche’s side have just one point to their name, drawing 2-2 with Sheffield United after losses against Fulham, Aston Villa and Wolves.

Worryingly, they are the league’s joint-lowest scorers, level with Luton Town on two goals. More worryingly is the fact that the Hatters have played a game fewer.

The stalemate with the Blades represented the club’s first goals of the campaign, scored by Doucoure and summer recruit Arnaut Danjuma.

And now the club’s worrying Expected Goals figure has come to light, with journalist Alex Keble writing for the official Premier League website (5 September): “They underperformed against their Expected Goals (xG) by 13.2 last season, more than any other Premier League club, and are again bottom of the table in 2023/24 with -5.2 xG.

Fortunately for Everton fans, Dyche worked hard in the summer transfer window to try and solve the issue. The man in the dugout has focused heavily on new attackers, with wingers Danjuma and Jack Harrison arriving on loan from Villarreal and Leeds United respectively.

Beto meanwhile, who scored 10 Serie A goals for Udinese last season, has been brought in permanently alongside fellow striker Youssef Chermiti from Sporting Lisbon.

In other Everton news, a journalist has shared a “centre of attention” verdict on a Toffees player who “enjoys the boos.”
