Phil McNulty blasts Moshiri and Kenwright for creating ‘financial nightmare’ at Everton

Phil McNulty has taken aim at Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright for creating a “financial nightmare” at Everton.

Responding to fans’ questions on the BBC Sport website on 6 September (08:09am), the journalist said that years of bad decision-making are “coming home to roost” at Goodison Park.

He said there has been “too much change” and “too many managers”, which has now landed the club in a “perilous position”, with Moshiri and Kenwright the main culprits to blame.

“I’m afraid years of bad decision-making are coming home to roost,” said McNulty. “Money squandered in the markets and a board too keen to congratulate themselves as Everton entered a football and financial nightmare.

“Too much change. Too many managers and now they are in this perilous position again. Owner and board the biggest culprits so that means the current answer to your question is Farhad Moshiri in tandem with chairman Bill Kenwright and those who have been on the board.”

Due criticism

There are very few people who will argue that Moshiri and Kenwright – as well as the other members of the board who have overseen the past few years over chaos – aren’t due plenty of criticism.

While the club’s finances are in a shocking position, performances on the pitch haven’t been much better after the club have flirted with relegation over the past couple of seasons.

The Blues have been posting huge losses for a number of years, with the BBC reporting on 22 May that they have lost £430million over the past five years.

That has led to the club operating under a strict budget, with Sean Dyche being forced to sell midfielder Alex Iwobi to Fulham on the final day of the transfer window to balance the books.

It certainly isn’t a pretty situation at the moment in time, but while the off-field issues are worrying, the Toffees have to ensure they remain in the Premier League this season to avoid exacerbating their problems.
