Everton star Idrissa Gueye shares future admission as international retirement mooted

Everton ace Idrissa Gueye raged as he was asked by reporters whether he will retire from international football for Senegal.

Speaking in a press conference on 11 September ahead of the game against Algeria on 12 September (via SeneNews), the 33-year-old said he doesn’t know what the future holds but that he is “always happy” to represent the national team.

The Toffees midfielder added that if the Senegal coach Aliou Cisse and the people need him, he will play for his country for as long as his body allows him to do so.

“Why do you want me to stop?” asked Gueye when questioned whether he is considering retirement. “Honestly, I don’t know, only God knows.

“We are here to represent our country, to compete. We are competitors and we are always happy to come to the national team.

“The question may arise but, personally, as long as the body follows, the coach needs me and the people need me, I will respond. So we’ll see, the future will tell us.”

Unsurprising

This won’t come as too much of a surprise to hear that Gueye isn’t considering retirement for Senegal as he is the type of player who will always give his all for whoever he is playing for.

He has racked up 102 caps for his country since 2011 and is no doubt proud of that record, so he will probably want to add to that tally as much as he possibly can.

The midfielder clearly feels he has more to give and he’ll be hoping he can also provide more for Everton after a tricky start to the season.

Gueye had always been a reliable option in the middle of the park, but he has shown that his best days might be behind him in recent weeks.

If he continues making long trips away to play for Senegal, that may also contribute to his career not lasting as long as it potentially could, but no one would blame him for wanting to continue representing his country.

In other Everton news, a pundit has labelled one player a “coward” following his recent actions.
