Ashley Young take on 777 Partners Everton takeover is not ‘what th fans want to hear’

Ashley Young has commented on the rumours surrounding 777 Partners’ takeover of Everton, claiming the players are just concentrated on what goes on on the pitch rather than any behind-the-scenes business.

The new arrival at Goodison Park has said the only thing the players can worry about is what happens on the pitch, and shouldn’t be distracted by the ongoing situation behind the scenes at the club.

777 Partners are reportedly now in exclusive talks with the club over a full-scale takeover from Farhad Moshiri (Sky Sports, 12 September).

The new Everton signing was speaking live on talkSPORT on 14 September, where he was asked about the takeover, and claimed: “It isn’t what the fans want to hear, but us as players have got to concentrate on what goes on on the pitch.

“That’s all we can worry about and just hope for it to be run smooth and the process be easy for the club, and like I say, as players, all we have got to do is go out there and produce on the pitch.”

Players can’t afford to be distracted

While fans would be hoping for more of a statement from Young on the possible takeover, with plenty of discussion ongoing surrounding the positives and negatives of the deal, it should be accepted that there is only so much he can really say.

For a player to come out and be critical, or indeed positive, about a takeover that has not yet been finalised would be a rarity, particularly when their comments hold so much weight among fans and around the club itself.

The players’ concentration needs to remain on the field. The only influence they can have at this stage is through performing and getting results in the Premier League to give Everton the best chance of survival despite a few rough years in which they have been threatened.

While the comments may be frustrating, it does show that the squad are focused on keeping their focus and making sure they do all they can for the club rather than being distracted by off-field issues.
