Ashley Young shares Dominic Calvert-Lewin fitness update ahead of Everton v Arsenal

Everton full-back Ashley Young has claimed Dominic Calvert-Lewin could return to the side as Everton face Arsenal at Goodison Park on Sunday (17 September).

The new arrival at Goodison Park shared his “hopeful” view, although it came with a caveat that any decision will still depend on what the club’s doctors and physios have to say about his fitness.

Calvert-Lewin has been plagued by injuries in recent times, and it seemed as if there was light at the end of the tunnel when he returned against Aston Villa in the 4-0 defeat before he was forced off with yet another setback, this time with a facial injury.

Speaking live on talkSPORT on 14 September, Young claimed: “I think he should be back; hopefully we’ll have him back this weekend. It depends on what the docs and physios say.”

Hoping for a strong return to the side

Calvert-Lewin will be hoping to finally put his string of injury issues behind him if he makes his return against Arsenal, having featured in just one Premier League game so far this season, where he was unlucky to be forced off with an injury after taking a blow to the face.

His latest injury came off the back of a long-term hamstring injury that ruled him out of the final stages of last season, but his comments from pre-season training suggested he had been working hard over the summer to make a strong comeback.

Everton prioritised the signing of a new striker during the transfer window and ultimately were able to bring in Beto from Udinese alongside Youssef Chermiti from Sporting CP, both of whom will be looking to mount a strong challenge to Calvert-Lewin’s place.

Beto in particular has been tipped to replace the former England international in the side, after a strong showing against Sheffield United and having scored in the Carabao Cup on his Everton debut against Doncaster Rovers.
