Everton takeover twist as London talks set amid 777 Partners concern

Premier League owners are set to voice their concerns surrounding the possible 777 Partners takeover of Everton at the first summit meeting of the season, as they gather in London this week, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper shared via their website on 20 September that the clubs are understood to be worried about the uncertainty surrounding the source of the funding, and possible reputational damage to the Premier League.

Those concerns are focused on the ongoing legal cases 777 Partners are fighting in the USA, although sources close to the deal have shared that they plan to use their own capital rather than borrowing.

Similarities can be drawn with previous concerns

The fact that Premier League clubs are making their voices heard over takeover concerns sounds like it should be a concern for Everton, but when compared with previous situations, the claims may have no effect on the decision after all.

For instance, select clubs had made complaints regarding the eligibility of the Saudi Arabian PIF takeover of Newcastle United, and we have all seen how far those complaints went.

Another example closer to home was the calls from clubs to accelerate the investigation into financial breaches at Everton, which was also unsuccessful – that hearing is set to take place next month.

So while these fresh complaints may through a spanner in the works in terms of how smoothly this takeover gets done, past experiences have shown that the Premier League are not particularly keen to act when clubs come calling with complaints to better their own interests.

It is also shared by the Daily Mail that the Premier League clubs are allowed to vote on other issues, but takeovers are excluded from the voting process and left up to the league to make the call.
