Sean Dyche makes ‘confused’ admission ahead of Everton v Brentford

Everton manager Sean Dyche has admitted his players “sometimes get confused” when reflecting on their individual performances.

The Toffees have collected just one point from five Premier League matches heading into their contest at Brentford on Saturday [23 September].

Everton offered little in last weekend’s 1-0 home loss to Arsenal, but Dyche was eager to take positives from the contest.

However, when asked how the players responded when analysing what went wrong, Dyche is quoted by the Liverpool Echo [23 September] as saying: “Sometimes they get confused about why it didn’t quite feel right.

“We ask them about the prep, did they need something different, all the things that can affect an individual, when it ripples through the team, you get a down day.

“I must be honest, Arsenal are a very good side – I was more concerned by the Aston Villa performance [when losing 4-0 last month] – we were miles off. I have to balance that.”

Put things right

The heavy loss to Villa and home defeat to Arsenal were worrying in their own ways.

While losing to in-form Arsenal is hardly a disgrace, the Toffees offered very little in terms of attacking threat.

There have been very few positives to pick out from Everton’s performances this season, the highlight being a point at Sheffield United.

Put simply, whether it is the players themselves or Dyche, a solution has to be found to what is going so badly wrong on the field.

The fact the players “get confused” when reviewing losses does not bode all that well.

Everton’s latest opportunity to put things rights comes in West London against Brentford, who are not exactly flying at the minute.

Let’s just hope there is no need for the players to watch back another lacklustre display over the coming days.

In other Everton news, a possible contender to replace Dyche at Goodison Park has emerged.
