Gary Lineker stunned by Everton after Premier League win v Brentford
Gary Lineker was stunned as Everton earned their first victory of the season in a 3-1 away triumph over Brentford.
Taking to X (23 September), the BBC presenter hailed his former side for their brilliant performance at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.
Abdoulaye Doucoure’s sixth-minute effort was cancelled out later in the first half by Mathias Jensen, before James Tarkowski and substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored within four minutes of each other to secure a much-needed three points.
Lineker said: “What a joy to see Everton playing so brilliantly.”
Much, much needed
Sean Dyche will have let out a massive sigh of relief after his side’s excellent performance against the Bees on Saturday (23 September).
Brentford is a tough place to go for any side, but Everton had an urgency and lethal edge to their performance that has been missing all this season, and most of last season too.
A prime Lineker is exactly what the Toffees have needed up top amid Beto’s continued struggles to find the net. However, it was Calvert-Lewin from the bench as his replacement to put the Toffees in the lead, a lead they earned and kept.

“Brilliantly” is an apt word for the Blues’ output in Brentford. Per SofaScore, the Toffees outplayed the Bees on important attacking metrics, with 1.84 expected goals, 18 shots and five big chances created.
Dyche will need to build on this momentum, as upcoming clashes against Luton Town and Bournemouth look to be some of the best chances of picking up points this season. With the Merseyside derby just around the corner too (21 October), the Toffees will want to enter that clash on fine form, and this victory is a good way to start.
In other Everton news, the Toffees would be “front of the queue” to bring in this manager of Dyche gets the axe.
