Everton defender James Tarkowski tips Jarrad Branthwaite to go ‘to the very top’

James Tarkowski has heaped praise on his centre-back partner Jarrad Branthwaite, claiming he could reach the very top of the game after his performances for Everton so far this season.

Tarkowski has started Everton’s last four Premier League games alongside the 21-year-old and has revealed he was surprised at how good he really is after his loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last season.

The defensive structure in Sean Dyche’s side has been noticeably improved since Branthwaite came into the side to replace Michael Keane, and he has now earned himself a nailed-on starting role in the side.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo on 25 September, Tarkowski was full of praise for his defensive partner, stating: “He’s calm, technically very good, physical and quick. He’s also got size.

“He’s got everything to go to the very top of the game, especially for his age. I didn’t see too much of him last season, so this was my first real look and I’ve been really impressed.”

High praise from his teammate

Receiving such high praise from his teammates should show just how good Branthwaite is. Being singled out for praise despite a difficult start to the season at Goodison Park, and still being mentioned despite the forwards finally taking the limelight, is a display of his quality.

Tarkowski’s experience and respect in the game, particularly in the Premier League, will mean his high praise will stand out to Branthwaite, and he will hope to continue impressing his teammates as well as improving his game as he looks to achieve what Tarkowski expects of him.

Branthwaite’s experience at the highest level is better than he gets credit for, having won the Dutch Cup while on loan at PSV as a key player in that side, and having made several top-flight appearances even before that loan spell.

He will now be hoping to keep developing his game at Everton, with Sean Dyche a fantastic coach to learn under as a defender, and it will be seen how far his career can go in the coming years.
