Chris Sutton predicts result of Everton showdown v Luton Town

Chris Sutton has predicted that Everton will make it three wins on the bounce when they face Luton Town in the Premier League on Saturday 30 September.

The Toffees got their season up and running with a win over Brentford last week and continued that momentum with an impressive win over Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (27 September) and Sutton believes they will get the better of Luton as well, predicting a 2-0 win.

Rob Edwards’ Hatters are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season having been held to a draw with 10-man Wolves before a much-changed side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Exeter City and Sutton believes the Toffees will add to their misery.

Writing for his BBC Sport Premier League predictions [28 September] he said: “It is two wins on the bounce now for Everton and I loved how Sean Dyche approached their Carabao Cup tie with Aston Villa in midweek – he picked a strong team, and he got his reward.

“Last weekend’s win at Brentford was a huge result for the Toffees to kickstart their season and Dyche wanted to maintain their momentum at Villa – and now that confidence will carry on into this game too. Luton did things differently with their tie against League One side Exeter – they made 10 changes and lost.

“I can’t see them getting anything at Goodison Park, to be honest. Their game plan will be to frustrate Everton, but Dyche has options up front now Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fit and in form. He could even play Beto alongside him too.”

Momentum

It’s quite amazing how much can change in the space of a week. Ahead of Everton’s clash with Brentford, Sutton was describing the mood around Goodison Park as miserable and that their trip to the Brentford Community Stadium would bring more misery.

Now there’s talk of momentum and confidence around Dyche’s side, words that haven’t described the Toffees for a couple of years, but it does feel like they could well have turned a corner this season and they’ll want to keep that up when they face the Hatters.

Edward’s side have looked there for the taking in every game they’ve played so far this season and Dyche will be hoping his side can be the latest to take advantage of their poor start to the season as it would put a good gap between them and the relegation places.

What could be exciting is if the Toffees do opt to start both Beto and Calvert-Lewin together in attack. The Portuguese forward is still finding his feet in England while the Englishman looks back to his best so they could well benefit from playing alongside one another.
