Everton appear to show faith in Kevin Thelwell with new Goodison Park arrival imminent

Everton are close to announcing the appointment of Phil Boardman as part of their backroom staff, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Chris Beesley reported on the outlet’s online edition on Friday [29 September] that Boardman will take up a European scouting role with Everton.

Boardman is currently working at Portsmouth, where he has spent the past six years, but is now said to be serving a period of notice before departing.

The imminent appointment of fresh eyes in the transfer department could be seen as a threat to director of football Kevin Thelwell.

However, Thelwell may well have had a say in the Toffees’ approach for Boardman as they previously worked together at Wolves.

That means the pair will reunite at Goodison Park to work on overseas transfer targets for Everton.

It is a show of faith of sorts in Thelwell, who was under growing pressure as the club struggled to complete deals during the summer window.

A recent report by The Telegraph [15 September] suggested Thelwell’s job was safe, and that appears to have now been backed up.

This ultimately must be viewed as a positive development, as it ensures there is some stability high up at a time of uncertainty behind the scenes.

With 777 Partners trying to finalise a takeover, there may or may not be more money to play with in the January window.

If that is the case, the sooner Boardman can get to work alongside Thelwell, the better.
