Paul Brown calls for Everton star Arnaut Danjuma to ‘show more consistency’

Journalist Paul Brown has called for Everton summer signing Arnaut Danjuma to “show more consistency” if he wants to earn a regular starting role in Sean Dyche’s side.

Brown suggests the boss may see Danjuma as an impact substitution rather than a starting player, in a role many would not have expected when the club landed their long-term transfer target in the summer.

He claims that role would allow the forward to play more of an important role at Goodison Park, after suggesting he is not good enough to be a regular starter in Dyche’s current system.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT on 28 September, the former Express journalist stated: “I don’t really know how much Everton were expecting from Danjuma.

“Obviously, they went for him before and he turned them down to go to Spurs. So they’ve looked at this guy for quite a long time and like what he does. Whether he’s got enough to be a regular starter over the course of a season, I really don’t know.

“I think he’s going to need to show a lot more consistency to get in that team on a regular basis. I suspect that he’s probably not in Dyche’s mind as a regular starter and that he would prefer to use him more as a kind of impact player from the bench, which is really what he mostly did for Spurs.

“And in that role, he could be quite important this season. But I think if he wants to be playing every week, he needs to show a lot more than he has so far.”

Not the right fit for the system

The way the boss sets up his teams, with two wingers on either side of a midfield two, a number ten and a striker, means Danjuma will find it difficult to slot into any stable role in the side.

Dyche has expressed concerns over where Danjuma’s best position is, suggesting he is somewhere in between a winger and a striker, which makes him hard to accommodate in the one-striker system where the wingers are expected to do more of the dirty work.

He won’t start as the lone striker ahead of either Beto or Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with Dyche’s preference for his strikers to be effective aerial presences and physically dominant. However, Dwight McNeil’s work rate and crossing ability from the left mean that spot is all but his.

Due to this, the possibility of being an impact sub off the bench when chasing the game could be the best option for the Dutch forward, as he will be able to show what he can provide against tired legs late in a game.

In other Everton news, a star man could make the difference between relegation and survival after what he has done.
