Journalist slams ‘anonymous’ Everton star Amadou Onana at Goodison Park

Journalist Paul Brown has slammed Everton star Amadou Onana for his lack of consistency, saying he has everything to be a top player but can be completely anonymous as well.

This inconsistency has frustrated Everton fans too, with demands for him to step up his performances and make more of an impact on Sean Dyche’s side across the space of the season rather than certain games.

The journalist labelled Onana a “conundrum”, and suggested he may not work as hard as Everton fans would like him to, despite his excellent skillset and ability.

Brown was speaking to GIVEMESPORT on 12 October, when he claimed: “Onana is such a conundrum. He has games where he looks like a world-beater, and you can see that he’s got a little bit of everything.

“He’s got the touch, the physicality, the energy and the drive and sometimes the vision and the passing range as well.

“And then he has other games where he’s almost completely anonymous, and I think it’s that consistency that people would like to see a bit more of.

“Everton fans like to see their players playing with passion, putting their whole heart and soul into things and I think maybe you don’t always see that from Onana.”

A harsh assessment, but a fair one

Brown’s comments on Onana seem harsh, and they are, but it may be the sort of thing the Belgian international needs if he is to improve this part of his game, which has been brought up by fans at Goodison Park fairly regularly over the last season and a bit.

When he’s good he’s really good, and when he’s bad he’s really bad. There seems to be no middle ground with Onana despite his varied skillset which should see him thrive in the middle under Dyche’s guidance.

The boss has praised his midfield man recently and suggested he could do a job in any role in midfield whether that be as a deep destroyer, a playmaker between the defence and attack, or a box-crashing number ten as seen at Everton in the past with Marouane Fellaini. Perhaps unlocking a specialist position for him would assist in finding consistency, but there needs to be a concerted effort from the player to turn in impressive displays week in, week out.

In other Everton news, a finance expert has suggested more could come out about Moshiri’s finances.
