Dermot Gallagher reacts to Ashley Young sending off for Everton v Liverpool live on Sky Sports
Ashley Young was right to be sent off for two bookable offences for Everton against Liverpool on Saturday (21 October), according to Dermot Gallagher.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch on Monday (23 October, 11:30am), the former Premier League referee said he thought both fouls by the 38-year-old were yellow cards after he was sent off in the first half.
He added that it was a “reckless challenge” that saw the English left-back receive a second yellow card after he brought down Luiz Diaz on the edge of the box in the Blues’ 2-0 defeat at Anfield.

“I thought both yellow cards were correct,” said Gallagher. “I thought having a first yellow card, he just makes a really reckless challenge on Diaz.
“Ironically it was Diaz with the first one as well, but I think everyone expects him to go there once he’s on a yellow card.”
Risky
It was an extremely risky challenge for Young to make on the edge of his own box after already picking up a yellow card earlier in the game.
A player of his experience should know better in those situations and he really let his team down in that instance after they had largely kept Liverpool quiet up until that point.
While there has been an argument around whether the first foul was worthy of a caution, he has to stay on his feet from that point onwards and not give the referee any opportunity to send him off.

The biggest frustration for the Toffees, however, was the decision to not send Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate off after he committed a cynical foul on Beto having already picked up a yellow card.
There can’t be too many arguments from a Blues perspective around the Young red card, but all you ask for is consistency from the officials, and yet again that was nowhere in sight at Anfield.
