Journalist shares admission on Everton chances of signing Kalvin Phillips in January
Paul Brown doubts Everton will be able to pull off a deal to sign midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in January.
Speaking to GiveMeSport on Sunday (22 October), the former Daily Star journalist said he finds it “hard to believe” the England international would give up Champions League football and the chance to win trophies with the Citizens for a move to Goodison Park.
He added that the 27-year-old would “play every week” for the Toffees, but that it’s a “real long shot” to try and persuade him to make the switch to Merseyside.

“I just find it hard to believe that Kalvin Phillips would want to give up Champions League football and the chance to win what could be a bucket load of trophies again this season with Manchester City for Everton,” said Brown.
“They just can’t offer him the same opportunities, unfortunately. Kalvin Phillips is not getting a lot of playing time at City. I understand that. That can be frustrating. And obviously, Everton is not far from the part of the world where he lives.
“It is obviously a club where he would play every week but I think it’s a real long shot to get him into the club as much as I’d love to see it happen. I doubt it.”
Unlikely
It seems unlikely that Everton will be able to pull off a deal for Phillips in January due to a number of factors surrounding the move.
The midfielder first of all appears to be set on wanting to fight for his place with Man City and the Toffees probably wouldn’t be able to afford the finances behind any potential deal.
The Englishman would no doubt improve the Toffees side and would play regular football, but he would more than likely still want to compete in Europe.

A lot of it is going to come down to the Citizens, what their plans are for him and how much they are willing to let him leave for if they decide to let him go.
There is likely to be an awful lot of interest in signing him, though, so it just feels as though it’s not a transfer that’s currently an option for the Blues due to their current situation.
