Pundit shares what Everton did ‘very, very well’ v Liverpool, have ‘obviously worked on it’ in training

Everton have “obviously worked” on playing with 10 men in training, according to talkSPORT pundit Alan Pardew.

The former Premier League manager noted that the Toffees coped “very, very well” with that scenario against Liverpool.

Everton went down to 10 men in their clash at Anfield on Saturday (21 October) after Ashley Young’s first-half red card.

“Obviously you have to go through scenarios with your squad, and a lot of it is done in pre-season because you’ve got time,” Pardew said live on talkSPORT. “Because when you have two games a week it’s very difficult to fit those things in, like playing with 10 men for example.

“But sometimes when you do team play, you would take a player out and just reorganise yourself and know the jobs that you need to do. Because there are only two or three ways you can set up.

“The players need to know their jobs in that situation, and Everton have obviously worked on it, and they did it very, very well.”

Big ask

It was a big ask for Dyche and his players to get something from the game on Saturday from the very first whistle, never mind when they lost Young.

The two clubs went into the match in very different spirits, with the hosts flying high near the top of the table and the visitors struggling near the bottom.

But the gulf in class wasn’t so evident at Anfield, with both teams slightly under-performing, perhaps given how it was their first match back after the recent international break.

Even a usually boisterous stadium wasn’t in full spirits, but the home supporters were lifted when Young – a former Manchester United player – saw red for two early yellow cards.

But the men in blue did put up an impressive feat, with Liverpool finally breaking their defensive block through a Mohamed Salah penalty in the 75th minute.

The Egyptian star then added his second of the afternoon in the dying seconds to secure a 2-0 win for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

In other Everton news, a clear timeline has emerged for the Toffees to sign one Premier League man as Fabrizio Romano drops a transfer update.
