Everton ‘likely’ to sell one of Amadou Onana or Jarrad Branthwaite amid ‘perilous’ finances – The Athletic

Everton will “likely need to sell” either Amadou Onana or Jarrad Branthwaite in the next year, according to The Athletic.

The publication reported on its website on Tuesday (24 October) that one of the two players could exit due to the club’s “perilous” financial situation.

As per Reuters (18 October), Everton’s most recent figures showed a fifth straight year of losses – £44.7million for the 2021/22 season – with total loss over that period amounting to over than £430million.

Discussing a potential switch to Newcastle for Onana, The Athletic wrote: “Newcastle previously took advantage of Everton’s financial situation when signing Anthony Gordon in January – and with finances still perilous, Sean Dyche’s side will likely need to sell one of Onana or centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite in the next year.”

Top players

Everton don’t exactly boast a lot of standout players, with the Toffees really struggling to get points on the board this season as they lean towards the relegation zone.

But centre-back Branthwaite and centre-midfielder Onana have shone at times, and are definitely among the top players at Goodison Park.

The former has formed a strong partnership with veteran defender James Tarkowski, and is also impressing on the international stage with England Under-21ss.

The latter meanwhile is a fully-fledged Belgium international, and will definitely struggle to keep it that way if he continues in an under-performing Everton side.

Toffees manager Dyche will definitely be reluctant to sell just one of the star men, but the worrying financial situation could see both players leave in the near future.

That would be the worst possible outcome for the Merseyside club, but they may just be powerless, particularly if a club with the financial pull of Newcastle come along.
