Wayne Rooney hails ‘big inspiration’ Bill Kenwright after Everton announce his death aged 78

Wayne Rooney paid a glowing tribute to Bill Kenwright, calling him a “big inspiration” after his death at the age of 78 was announced by Everton on Tuesday (25 October).

Kenwright served on Everton’s board since 1989 and had 19 years as chairman. During that time he witnessed Rooney become a teenage prodigy at Goodison Park before reluctantly selling him to Manchester United in August 2004.

Former England captain Rooney returned to Everton for a second spell in 2017 and he hailed Kenwright in a heartfelt message reported by the Liverpool Echo (25 October).

Everton

“Devastated to hear the sad news about Bill Kenwright. Known Bill since I was young and he’s had a huge impact on me as a person and my career,” the message read.

“Great man and a big inspiration. Thoughts are with all Bill’s family and friends.”

A sad time

You only have to look at the sort of tributes in filing in from Everton players past and present to see what kind of impact Kenwright had on the playing staff at Goodison Park.

The likes of Rooney, Seamus Coleman, Duncan Ferguson, Andy Gray, and Alex Iwobi are among those to have relayed messages since the sad news was confirmed by the club on Tuesday.

Everton

Kenwright was a man who simply bled blue, he was an Evertonian through and through, and absolutely loved the club.

It is true that sadly his relationship with a frustrated fanbase soured towards the end, with Everton struggling financially off the pitch under Farhad Moshiri and struggling at the wrong end of the table in recent seasons.

But ultimately, Kenwright was a hugely devoted servant to Everton and he should be remembered with fondness by all involved with the club, including players, coaches, and supporters.

In other Everton news, Andy Gray said nothing should tarnish Bill Kenwright’s legacy at Everton.
