Simon Jordan and Jim White clash live on air as Everton news emerges

Simon Jordan and Jim White have clashed live on air regarding the punishment that should be handed down to Everton following the club’s alleged spending breach.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday (26 October, 11:07am), presenter White called for the independent commission to set a precedence after it has been reported that the Toffees could be facing a 12-point deduction [The Telegraph].

But pundit Jordan argued that each case needs to be determined by its “individual merit” rather than a precedence being set, adding that Manchester City, who are facing 115 charges for alleged financial breaches, would be “delighted” if the Blues only received a financial sanction.

“Their job (the commission) is to look at what is the facts, the circumstances, the recommended sanctions within the confines of the Premier League guidebook, adhere to them and put down the appropriate sanction,” said Jordan.

“If they only got a financial sanction, teams like Manchester City would be delighted because they would believe that precedence will then follow onto them if they were found guilty of something.”

“That’s the point, so there needs to be a precedence set,” replied White.

“Well, not necessarily,” said Jordan. “Each case needs to be determined by its individual merit, not a precedence.”

“Everton have attributed £90.4million worth of losses between 2020 and 2022 to Covid-related losses,” said White. “Costs related to the new stadium, the women’s team, community work.

“Now that figure of £90.4million has raised eyebrows because it remains a sticking point as it is much more than any other Premier League club. In other words, Everton standout in that area, it’s almost double the amount of other clubs.”

The unknown

The biggest concern for Everton fans must be the many unknowns regarding this situation as it could potentially have a massive impact on the club moving forward.

There is no previous case of this nature in the Premier League era that can be drawn upon to suggest which way things are going to go, but it doesn’t look great for the Toffees.

It comes down to whether or not the commission wants to use the Blues to send a message to other clubs that their actions are not acceptable if they are found guilty.

That seems likely to result in the Merseysiders being handed a 12-point deduction, which you would think will probably see them relegated this season.

It would be a huge blow to the club’s hopes moving forward and really put their future in doubt given the already difficult financial situation at Goodison Park.
